How would you like a chance to talk to one of the top former officials at the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and get his insights into the trucking regulatory environment? Attendees at Heavy Duty Trucking Exchange, Sept. 4-6 in Scottsdale, Arizona, will get that chance when Jack Van Steenburg delivers the opening keynote address.
Van Steenburg will kick off HDTX the evening of September 4 with a presentation following dinner titled, “Life after FMCSA: A Different Perspective on Safety & Compliance.”
He retired last year after 15 years with the FMCSA, where he was executive director, chief safety officer, and assistant administrator. Now he’s turning that inside knowledge into real-world insights and advice for trucking fleets as principal for CMV Safety Experts LLC.
Van Steenburg will talk about his experiences at FMCSA, what he’s seeing today, and what he believes we will see in the future from a regulatory standpoint. Will we ever see a speed limiter rule? How about revamping the safety fitness rating system?
And he’ll discuss real-world recommendations on how fleets can improve safety and compliance and combat litigation.
“I want to let them know, don’t take things for granted,” Van Steenburg told HDT.
Having safety policies in place is not enough. Fleets need to follow up and make sure they are living up to every part of those policies.
More About Jack Van Steenburg
Van Steenburg recently formed a consulting business, CMV Safety Experts. He brings years of extensive knowledge of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s expectations and views to motor carriers, attorneys, and safety groups on commercial motor vehicle safety.
He retired from FMCSA in May of 2023, after serving 15 years in the agency. He was the executive director and chief safety officer for the agency and the first person to hold the title of executive director. Previously, Van Steenburg served as FMCSA’s director of enforcement and compliance.
Before joining FMCSA in 2008, he served in the New York State Police for 25 years and rose through the ranks of Trooper to Staff Inspector.
He also served as the elected president of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and participated on their executive committee for a decade.
In his time at FMCSA, Van Steenburg has spoken at events such as the American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition.
