Iran was behind the recent hack of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, US intelligence officials have confirmed.
The FBI and other federal agencies said in a joint statement that Iran had chosen to interfere in the US election “to stoke discord and undermine confidence in our democratic institutions”.
The Trump campaign earlier this month pointed the finger at Iran for the hacking of internal messages. Iranian officials denied it.
The Republican’s campaign was reportedly sent a spear-phishing email β a message designed to look trustworthy in order to get the target to click on a malicious link.
βThe [intelligence community] is confident that the Iranians have through social engineering and other efforts sought access to individuals with direct access to the Presidential campaigns of both political parties,β US intelligence officials said in the statement.
βSuch activity, including thefts and disclosures, are intended to influence the US election process.β
The agencies that released the statement, including the FBI, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, said the tactics were “not new” and noted that Russia and Iran had employed such methods during previous US elections.
It remains unclear what information, if any, was stolen during the hack. Trump said the hackers were only able to obtain publicly available information.
